30 Year’s War

The Holy Roman Empire was a union of many smaller nations located in Central Europe and included states that would eventually become modern day Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Czechia, Belgium, Eastern France, Northern Italy, Southern Denmark, among others. It was a union with a democratically elected Emperor who was the symbolic figurehead of the HRE. While each independent state had its own rights, the collective Empire did have some struggles because for the most part, each prince would choose whether his state would be Catholic or Protestant, often at the expense of a minority. One of the most extreme was Bohemia, where there was a near precise 50-50 split between Catholics and Protestants, and a rivalry between the two started a rebellion that eventually grew to be known as the 30 Years’ War, a war that would consume the whole of present day Germany, with many nations including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, The Papal States, The Ottoman Empire, and France, intervening in the fighting. The end result was the Treaty of Westphalia, a treaty that granted religious self determination for Catholics and Protestants and ended the war. However, this war would have cost nearly 40% of the population of the HRE, with casualties for the most part evenly distributed among all the states. This war marked the end of religious conflicts in Western Europe, and was the downfall of Austria and The Papal States (at least, until the 1860s), and saw the rise of France and Sweden as world powers.

Grady Thomson

Chair

Grady Thomson is a first-year political science major, with a minor in philosophy. He was born in southern California, coming specifically from the city of Claremont. This will be his first time chairing a Specialized Body at a conference. Grady is incredibly interested in world history, and is looking forward to seeing how this committee deals with the trials of the 30 Years’ War. Outside of MUN, Grady likes soccer, music, and politics.
Fun fact: Grady’s last name is not spelled with a “P.”

Francesco Gnerre

Crisis Director

Francesco Gnerre is a second year Computer Science and Engineering major, with a minor in History. While originally coming from Arlington, Massachusetts, Francesco has lived the 4 years of his life prior to coming to UC Merced in Mountain View, California. He is studying Computer Science and History. Francesco chose to participate in the HRE specialized body because of the fact that The 30 Years War is one of the most influential events in modern European history, and yet it is not that well known.
Fun Fact: Francesco will respond if someone calls him Bovi or Bovine.

Faith Nordvik

Co-Chair

Faith Nordvik is a first year political science major, with a focus on international relations. She's from Livermore, so she's pretty new to the valley. This is her first time chairing a Specialized Body at a conference and is excited for the experience. She's very eager to see the creativity of the delegates in how they solve the problems of the 30 Years' War.
Fun fact: when she's not doing something MUN related, her favorite things to do include Netflix, sleeping, and petting dogs.
